Formation Bio Appoints Michael D. Ehlers as Chief Scientific Officer and Head of R&D

Formation Bio, an AI-native pharmaceutical company, has appointed Michael D. Ehlers, M.D., Ph.D., as its Chief Scientific Officer and Head of Research & Development. 

In his new role, Dr. Ehlers will provide end-to-end scientific and R&D leadership, overseeing portfolio strategy and advancement from translational research through clinical development while guiding the scientific direction of the company's proprietary AI platform.

Dr. Ehlers joins Formation Bio from MPM BioImpact, where he served as Entrepreneur Partner. Previously, he was Partner and Chief Scientific Officer at Apple Tree Partners, where he founded four biotechnology companies, including Ascidian Therapeutics, which he led as its founding Chief Executive Officer. Three of the companies he helped establish have since advanced to the clinical stage.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Ehlers held senior research and development leadership positions at Biogen as Executive Vice President of Research & Development and at Pfizer as Group Senior Vice President of BioTherapeutics Research and Chief Scientific Officer for Neuroscience. Across his industry career, programs under his leadership have resulted in six approved medicines spanning five therapeutic indications and four drug modalities, with more than 40 drug candidates advancing into clinical development.

Before entering the biopharmaceutical industry, Dr. Ehlers was the George Barth Geller Professor of Neurobiology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at Duke University Medical Center. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology and both his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ehlers joins Formation Bio as the company continues expanding its clinical-stage pipeline and leveraging its AI-driven platform to accelerate the development of innovative medicines.
