GC Therapeutics Appoints Dr. Stefan Irion as Chief Scientific Officer to Advance Cell Therapy Innovation

GC Therapeutics has appointed Stefan Irion as Chief Scientific Officer, strengthening the company’s leadership team as it advances next-generation cell-based medicines powered by its TFome™ induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) programming platform.

Dr. Irion brings more than 20 years of experience translating stem cell research into clinical-stage therapeutics and will lead GCTx’s scientific and research strategy as the company progresses its differentiated cell therapy pipeline toward clinical development.

The appointment follows the recent addition of Kate Haviland as Board Chair and reflects the company’s continued focus on expanding its leadership capabilities for future growth. Concurrently, co-founder Alex Ng will transition into the role of Chief Innovation Officer, where he will continue advancing the TFome™ platform and the company’s Cell State Cookbook™ and virtual cell modeling technologies.

Dr. Irion joins GCTx from BlueRock Therapeutics, an independently operated subsidiary of Bayer AG, where he served as Chief Scientific Officer and Executive Committee member. At BlueRock, he led a research organization of approximately 60 scientists focused on developing cell and gene therapies across multiple therapeutic areas.

Earlier in his career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Irion played a central role in the development of MSK-DA01 (bemdaneprocel), a pluripotent stem cell-derived therapy for Parkinson’s disease. He is also a named inventor on multiple patents in stem cell engineering and cell therapy, with research published in leading journals including Nature, Cell Stem Cell, and Nature Biotechnology.

Dr. Irion earned his medical degree summa cum laude from University of Tübingen and completed postdoctoral training at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and University Health Network.
