Dr. Leonardo Viana Nicacio
Protara Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing transformative therapies for cancer and rare diseases, has appointed Leonardo Viana Nicacio, M.D., as its new Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
Dr. Nicacio brings nearly 20 years of experience in oncology drug development, regulatory strategy, and medical affairs across top-tier biopharma and health tech companies. Most recently, he served as Head of Clinical Development and Global Medical Affairs at Stemline Therapeutics, a Menarini Group subsidiary, where he led global strategy for solid tumor programs.
Prior to that, Dr. Nicacio held key leadership roles at Seagen Inc., acquired by Pfizer in 2023, including as Vice President of Clinical Development overseeing a diverse portfolio spanning bladder, breast, gynecologic, lung, head and neck, and colorectal cancers. His earlier experience includes roles at AstraZeneca, where he contributed to the development and launch of durvalumab, and at Flatiron Health, where he helped pioneer real-world oncology data solutions. He also held positions at Sanofi and YM Biosciences.
Dr. Nicacio earned his M.D. from Faculdade de Ciências Médicas de Minas Gerais and completed a research fellowship in molecular biology at the New York Blood Center. Board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an active member of both the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
His appointment marks a significant milestone for Protara as it advances its pipeline of innovative cancer and rare disease therapies.
