Genentech Developed Breakthrough Therapy Gantenerumab for Alzheimer’s Disease

Genentech has developed a groundbreaking therapy for the treatment of early Alzheimer's disease (AD). This therapy, called Gantenerumab, is the first medicine designed to be administered at home for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Gantenerumab is an investigational IgG1 antibody that has undergone late-stage trials for the treatment of AD. It works by binding to the aggregated forms of amyloid beta, which are responsible for the formation of brain amyloid plaques, a characteristic feature of Alzheimer's disease.

The pivotal GRADUATE trials conducted for gantenerumab aim to assess its impact on reducing amyloid load and other biomarkers associated with the disease. These trials also evaluate the safety and effectiveness of gantenerumab in patients with early-stage AD, ranging from the prodromal stage to mild cognitive impairment.

It is worth noting that Alzheimer's disease is a type of brain disorder that primarily affects memory, language, and cognitive abilities, leading to changes in mood, behavior, and overall thinking skills. It is the most common form of dementia and is projected to affect a population of 78 million individuals by 2030. Currently, more than 55 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's disease, with nearly 10 million new cases being diagnosed each year.

Recognizing the potential of Gantenerumab, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted it breakthrough therapy designation, acknowledging its promising benefits for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
