Amgen and Novartis Pharma Collaborate to Develop Novel Approach for Migraine Prevention
Aimovig™, developed through a collaboration between Amgen and Novartis Pharma AG, introduces a novel therapeutic approach for the prevention of migraines. It achieves this by blocking the calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor (CGRP-R), a crucial factor in migraine development.
The self-administered Aimovig 70 mg is taken once a month using Amgen's SureClick® autoinjector device, eliminating the need for a loading dose. Some patients may require a monthly dosage of 140 mg.
Clinical trials have shown that Aimovig leads to significant reductions in monthly migraine days and the use of acute migraine medications compared to a placebo. These positive effects on migraine frequency have been observed for up to 15 months in an ongoing open-label extension study involving patients with episodic migraines (four to 14 headache days per month).
Aimovig's effectiveness and tolerability have been evaluated in over 3,000 patients. Common adverse reactions reported in clinical studies include injection site reactions and constipation.
Aimovig provides a self-administration option with proven efficacy for a broad range of patients, including those who have previously tried other preventive therapies without success.
FDA approval has been granted to Aimovig™ (erenumab-aooe) for the prevention of migraines in patients experiencing four or more migraine days per month.
