Onyx Scientific to Invest Over US$2 Million (£1.5 Million) in Sunderland GMP Facility Expansion
Introduction
Onyx Scientific is investing more than US$2 Million (£1.5 Million) to expand its Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facilities at its Sunderland, UK site. The investment will increase capacity for commercial active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production and provide greater flexibility to support early-phase GMP manufacturing programmes and commercial campaigns.
Features
The expansion will add four new GMP suites, increasing the total number of suites at the Sunderland facility from six to ten.
The additional capacity will support increased commercial API production while enabling faster delivery of early-phase GMP manufacturing programmes.
The investment includes new infrastructure and equipment to strengthen the site’s production capabilities and support continued capacity growth.
The expansion will initially create nine new jobs across production chemistry, analytical, and quality assurance functions, representing an overall workforce increase of approximately 8%.
The expanded facility will provide greater flexibility in production scheduling, allowing commercial manufacturing campaigns and time-sensitive early-phase GMP programmes to be accommodated simultaneously.
The investment forms part of Onyx Scientific’s longer-term development of its Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) platform, supporting drug programmes from process research and development through GMP manufacturing and commercial API supply.
The additional GMP capacity is expected to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers progress small-molecule drug programmes through different stages of development and manufacturing.
The expansion also reinforces Onyx Scientific’s commitment to Sunderland and the wider North East of England, supporting skilled employment and continued development of the regional life sciences sector.
