Genentech Expands Footprint with $700M Facility in North Carolina
Introduction
Genentech, part of the Roche Group, has begun construction of a new manufacturing site in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The facility is the company’s first on the East Coast of the United States and forms part of Roche and Genentech’s wider £40bn programme to strengthen American manufacturing, infrastructure and research.

The development represents an investment of over £550m in North Carolina. Once complete, it will span 700,000 square feet and will focus on producing advanced metabolic medicines, including new treatments for obesity.
The site is expected to create more than 400 permanent manufacturing roles locally, alongside 1,500 construction jobs during the building phase.
Holly Springs was selected for its growing reputation in life sciences, its skilled workforce, and its links to leading academic and research institutions in the Raleigh-Durham region.
The facility is designed to incorporate the latest in biomanufacturing technology, advanced automation and digital systems. It will also prioritise efficiency, sustainability and supply chain resilience. The 100-acre location allows room for future growth.
The new facility is scheduled to be fully operational by 2029.
