Evonik to Invest Over US$109 million in Vancouver GMP Manufacturing Facility

Introduction

Evonik is investing more than US$109 million (approximately EUR 93 million) in a new GMP drug product manufacturing facility for lipid-based drug delivery in Vancouver, Canada. The project will expand Evonik’s development and manufacturing capabilities, enabling pharmaceutical and biotech customers to advance lipid-based products, including vaccines, therapeutics, and other advanced medicines, from development through commercial scale. The investment is supported by up to US$49 million (approximately EUR 42 million) from the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund.

Features

The new facility will expand Evonik’s existing manufacturing capabilities for advanced pharmaceutical products and is expected to provide more than three times the manufacturing capacity of its current Vancouver facility.

The GMP facility will support the development and production of lipid-based drug delivery systems, including lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and liposomal formulations, helping customers progress from clinical development to commercial manufacturing.

The project will also significantly enhance quality control and microbiological testing capabilities, improving operational efficiency and supporting the timely release of products for clinical use.

The investment strengthens Evonik’s presence in Vancouver’s growing life sciences ecosystem and builds on the company’s long-standing expertise in lipid-based drug delivery through its Vancouver Laboratories.

Evonik’s integrated lipid and LNP network connects Vancouver with its sites in Birmingham, Dossenheim, Hanau, Boston, and Lafayette, providing capabilities across lipid chemistry, formulation development, sterile manufacturing, process engineering, and commercial production.

The project also supports the growing demand for LNP-based technologies used in mRNA vaccines, nucleic acid therapeutics, and other advanced medicines.
