Evonik Launches US$94 Million (EUR 80 million) Biotechnology Expansion in Slovakia
Introduction
Evonik has commenced construction of a new biotechnology expansion at its Fermas facility in Slovenská Ľupča, Slovakia. The development is part of an approximately US$94 million investment (EUR 80 million) aimed at expanding the company’s biotechnology platform and strengthening its contract manufacturing capabilities for pharmaceutical drug substances.

The expansion will equip the Fermas site with advanced downstream fermentation technology, enabling greater capacity for the development and production of complex pharmaceutical intermediates.
The project is expected to generate approximately 50 new jobs, supporting the continued development of the facility as a strategic biotechnology manufacturing hub within Evonik’s global network.
The investment builds on more than three decades of fermentation experience at Fermas.
Established in 1992, the site has expanded beyond amino acid manufacturing to support biotechnology applications across the pharmaceutical, personal care, nutrition and specialty chemicals sectors.
The new capabilities will support fermentation-based manufacturing of complex molecules.
For selected pharmaceutical intermediates, such processes can reduce reliance on organic solvents and help lower process-related waste compared with conventional chemical synthesis.
Sustainability is also incorporated into the site’s operations.
Fermas currently operates using 100% green electricity and uses renewable and certified raw materials in selected manufacturing processes.
The project represents another major investment in the site’s biotechnology capabilities and will further support Evonik’s contract development and manufacturing activities for pharmaceutical customers.
