Evonik Invests €80 Million to Expand Biotechnology Capabilities in Slovakia
Introduction
Evonik has invested €80 million to expand its biotechnology capabilities in Slovakia, strengthening its production capacity and innovation capabilities for sustainable biosolutions and advanced bioprocessing applications.
Features
The expansion will introduce advanced downstream fermentation technology to enhance production efficiency and scalability.
The development is expected to create around 50 new jobs, supporting roles in biotechnology, engineering, laboratory operations and technical services.
This marks the second major investment at the Fermas site in recent years, following the establishment of a rhamnolipids production facility initiated in 2022.
The site has become a key hub for industrial biotechnology, with increasing capabilities in biofermentation scale-up and downstream processing.
The investment also supports the company’s focus on sustainable production. Biotechnological processes such as fermentation enable the development of next-generation solutions that offer improved environmental performance compared to traditional methods.
The investment in Slovakia is aimed at strengthening the company’s contract manufacturing services for pharmaceutical drug substances and meeting rising demand for complex ingredients.
