Boehringer Ingelheim Invests £150 Million to Expand Global AI Footprint in the UK

Introduction

Boehringer Ingelheim is expanding its global Computational Innovation network with a new artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) centre in King’s Cross, London.

The company plans to invest around £150 million over the next 10 years to strengthen its capabilities in pharmaceutical research and development and support advances in disease understanding.

Features

The new centre will be located within London’s Knowledge Quarter, giving access to leading academic institutions, technology companies and research organisations.

The expansion will enhance the company’s work in AI, machine learning, human genetics and computational biology, helping to improve decision-making and accelerate the development of new therapies.

The facility is expected to focus on identifying biological mechanisms with higher success rates and improving understanding of diseases with high unmet medical need.

With this addition, the company’s Computational Innovation network will span Austria, Germany, the UK and the United States, strengthening its global research capabilities and supporting innovation in life sciences.

The initial phase, including the onboarding of 50 AI experts, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
