AbbVie Invests $1.4 Billion to Expand North Carolina Manufacturing Campus
Introduction
AbbVie has announced a $1.4 billion investment to establish a 185-acre pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Durham to support the production of immunology, neuroscience, and oncology medicines in the United States.
Features
The campus will incorporate advanced manufacturing systems, modern laboratories and artificial intelligence technologies to enhance production efficiency.
The first phase will include facilities for small volume parenteral (SVP) drug manufacturing, along with laboratories, a warehouse, office spaces and employee wellness areas.
The site is expected to become AbbVie’s centre of excellence in the United States for SVP manufacturing, which includes sterile injectable medicines such as vials and prefilled syringes.
The project will create around 734 permanent jobs, including roles for scientists, engineers, technicians and manufacturing staff. In addition, more than 2,000 jobs are expected to be generated during the construction phase.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the campus expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
