ABEC Launches Breakthrough Single-Use Bioreactor Technology for Cell Therapy Manufacturing

Tuesday, April 08, 2025

ABEC, a global leader in engineering solutions and services for biotechnology manufacturing, has launched its Advanced Therapy Bioreactor (ATB™). This revolutionary platform has the potential to change the way cells for advanced therapy pharmaceuticals (ATMPs) are expanded. Designed to overcome the limitations of existing systems, the ATB™ provides unprecedented process control and scalability from laboratory to commercial scale.

ATB™ redefines cell culture by simulating the human circulatory system. Its proprietary hollow fiber membrane network enables local nutrient delivery and waste removal, ensuring that each cell is in optimal growth conditions. Unlike traditional systems that rely on bubbles and mechanical agitation, ATB™'s oscillation-based mixing and diffusion-based gas and nutrient/waste transport maintain an optimal cell growth environment for sensitive cell lines. The bioreactor and process flow path are disposable, and the system operation is closed and fully automated.

Designed for seamless scale-up, ATB™ also maintains a constant ratio between hollow fiber surface area and bioreactor volume at all scales (0.2L to 10L), allowing consistent cell culture conditions from early development to clinical and commercial production. In extensive testing, ATB™ has demonstrated high cell density and cell viability for primary T cells, CD34+ stem cells, and HEK293 and CHO cell lines.

“The launch of ATB™ is another milestone in ABEC’s 50-year history of bioprocessing innovation,” said Scott Pickering, CEO of ABEC. “Like the solutions we offer for recombinant protein production, ATB™ has the potential to solve the toughest challenges in advanced therapeutic manufacturing and accelerate our partners’ path to the clinic and market.”
