XyloCor and SmartCella Collaborate on License Agreement for Extroducer in Novel Gene Therapy XC001 Targeting Heart Treatment

Thursday, July 11, 2024

XyloCor Therapeutics, Inc. ("XyloCor"), a company advancing gene therapies for cardiovascular diseases, has partnered with SmartWise, a unit of SmartCella Holding AB ("SmartCella"), to license the Extroducer® Infusion Catheter System. This agreement allows XyloCor to use the Extroducer for delivering its lead gene therapy, XC001 (encoberminogene rezmadenovec), directly into the heart in clinical studies and commercial applications, eliminating the need for surgery.

XyloCor, noted that this collaboration enhances XC001's delivery safety and convenience, potentially expanding its use to earlier stages of coronary artery disease. XC001 aims to reduce ischemic burden by promoting new blood vessel growth through localized expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) isoforms.

Dr. Timothy D. Henry, Director of the Lindner Center at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, expressed optimism about the Phase 2b trial of XC001, expecting improved efficacy and reduced complications compared to surgical methods. The EXACT Phase 1/2 trial demonstrated positive outcomes, including increased exercise duration and fewer angina episodes in refractory angina patients following minimally invasive surgical access.

SmartCella, highlighted the Extroducer's potential in advancing XC001 therapy for refractory angina patients, marking a significant milestone in their global expansion. The agreement includes financial terms like upfront payments, milestone payments, and royalties on sales, totaling around USD 130 million.

XC001's unique approach of localized, one-time administration aims to enhance efficacy while minimizing systemic side effects, positioning it as a promising therapy for improving the quality of life for patients with cardiovascular diseases.
