PeproMene Bio Reports Success in Phase 1 Trial for PMB-CT01 in B-ALL at City of Hope
Friday, January 19, 2024
PeproMene Bio, Inc., a biotech company in the clinical stage dedicated to developing innovative therapies for cancer and immune diseases, has announced that the initial patient in Cohort 1 of the phase 1 clinical trial involving PMB-CT01 (BAFFR-CAR T cells) for relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (r/r/B-ALL) has achieved a complete response one month after treatment.
This update follows the recent presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Budde, Ph.D., and Associate Professor in the Division of Lymphoma at City of Hope Medical Center, at the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting in San Diego. The study showcased that all three patients in the trial for relapsed/refractory non-Hodgkin's lymphoma achieved durable complete remissions with minimal toxicity (https://ash.confex.com/ash/2023/webprogram/Paper183032.html).
City of Hope Medical Center, a leading cancer research and treatment institution in the United States and the developer of the therapy, is conducting the trials.
Patients experienced no immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome ("ICANS") during the initial month of treatment. Only minor treatment-related toxicities, including first-degree cytokine release syndrome ("CRS"), were observed and resolved without intervention.
Dr. Ibrahim T. Aldoss, the principal investigator of the study and associate professor of the Division of Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation at City of Hope Medical Center, expressed satisfaction with the results. He highlighted the patient's limited therapeutic options due to CD19 and CD22 negativity in the recurrent disease.
Hazel Cheng, Ph.D., CEO of PeproMene, celebrated the milestone, emphasizing the therapy's safety profile and complete response. These positive clinical results align with preclinical research data from City of Hope Medical Center published in 2019, demonstrating the efficacy of BAFFR-CAR T cells in targeting various B-cell malignancies.
PMB-CT01, the first-of-its-kind BAFFR-targeted autologous CAR T-cell therapy, was developed in the laboratory of Dr. Larry W. Kwak, scientific founder of PeproMene, and vice president and associate director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at City of Hope Medical Center.
BAFF-R (B Cell Activating Factor Receptor) is the unique target for PMB-CT01, making it a promising treatment option for B-cell malignancies. PeproMene holds a license to the intellectual property of PMB-CT01 from City of Hope Medical Center, where the active ingredient "BAFFR(EQ)BBζ/EGFRt+ CAR T cells" is under investigation in this study.
