Merck Completes Acquisition of Terns Pharmaceuticals

Wednesday, May 06, 2026

Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, has completed the acquisition of Terns Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The acquisition supports Merck’s strategy to invest in science-led developments that can deliver meaningful innovation for patients. It also strengthens the company’s pipeline, particularly in oncology.

As part of the deal, Merck gains access to TERN-701, an investigational treatment being developed for chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). The therapy has shown potential as a differentiated option for certain patients with the disease.

TERN-701 has recently received Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This designation applies to the treatment of adults with Philadelphia chromosome-positive CML in the chronic phase who do not have the T315I mutation and have previously been treated with two or more tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
The designation is based on data from the ongoing Phase 1/2 CARDINAL clinical trial, which is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the therapy.
