Lilly Acquires 4E Therapeutics to Advance Non-Opioid Chronic Pain Treatments
Wednesday, June 17, 2026
4E Therapeutics, a neuroscience company based in Austin, Texas, has been acquired by Eli Lilly and Company as part of efforts to advance the development of non-opioid therapies for chronic pain.
4E Therapeutics is developing a pipeline of oral MNK inhibitors that target the MNK-eIF4E signalling pathway in peripheral sensory neurons. The approach is intended to provide pain relief while avoiding the central nervous system side effects commonly associated with many existing pain treatments.
The company’s lead candidate, 4ET1103, is the first MNK inhibitor for pain treatment to enter human clinical trials. In a Phase 1 study, the investigational therapy demonstrated a favourable safety profile.
The acquisition brings 4E’s chronic pain research and development programmes into Lilly’s pipeline, supporting the continued advancement of therapies aimed at addressing the underlying neurological mechanisms involved in chronic pain.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
4E Therapeutics was advised by Aquilo Partners as its exclusive financial adviser, while Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati served as legal counsel during the transaction.
