Jazz Pharmaceuticals Signs Exclusive Global Licensing Deal with Saniona for SAN2355

Jazz Pharmaceuticals plc has entered into a global licensing agreement with Saniona to secure exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialise SAN2355. The compound, currently in preclinical development, is a selective Kv7.2/Kv7.3 activator being investigated for epilepsy and other neurological conditions. It is designed to address the limitations of earlier non-selective Kv7-targeting treatments.
Under the agreement, Jazz will take responsibility for funding and leading the clinical development, regulatory processes, and global commercialisation of SAN2355.
Saniona will receive an upfront payment of US $42.5 million. The company is also eligible for development and regulatory milestone payments of up to US $192.5 million, including US $7.5 million on initiation of the first Phase 1 clinical trial. In addition, the deal includes up to US $800 million in commercial milestone payments tied to specific net sales targets, along with tiered royalties from the mid-single to low-double digits on future sales of SAN2355.
SAN2355 is a selective small molecule activator of Kv7.2/Kv7.3 potassium channels, a mechanism proven to play a key role in seizure suppression. While earlier Kv7-targeting agents have shown efficacy, their use has been restricted due to side effects linked with non-selective activation. SAN2355’s subtype selectivity aims to overcome these issues by targeting only the Kv7.2/Kv7.3 channels, which are directly linked to seizure control. This approach supports its potential as a best-in-class therapy for epilepsy.
