Gilead Sciences (Nasdaq: GILD) has broken ground on its new Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing (PDM) Technical Development Center (NTDC) at its Foster City headquarters. The project is a key part of Gilead’s long-term strategy to strengthen scientific leadership in virology, oncology, and inflammation, with a growing focus on biologics. It also forms part of the company’s planned $32 billion investment in U.S. innovation through 2030, which is expected to generate more than $43 billion in economic value and create thousands of high-quality jobs nationwide.

The NTDC will be a five-storey, 180,000 square foot facility designed as a hub for innovation and collaboration across technical development and manufacturing teams. It will include flexible pilot lab space, advanced digital infrastructure, and AI-enabled systems such as autonomous robotics and real-time monitoring, aimed at accelerating technology transfer and supporting next-generation biologics development.

This investment will expand Gilead’s biologics capabilities, which are central to the company’s growth plans. Alongside the NTDC, the Foster City site is also adding a new research building to accelerate discovery and a biologics manufacturing facility to strengthen domestic production. These projects build on more than $15 billion invested in U.S. research and manufacturing over the past decade, reinforcing Gilead’s role as a leading contributor to the biopharmaceutical sector and a driver of healthcare innovation.

The groundbreaking event brought together Gilead’s leadership team and local officials, highlighting the importance of these developments for both the region and the wider U.S. biopharma industry.
