Genomics plc and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Extend and Expand Collaboration in Drug Discovery

Wednesday, July 17, 2024

Genomics plc (Genomics) has announced a further three-year extension of its collaboration with Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Vertex) (Nasdaq: VRTX) to advance the discovery and development of precision medicines using human genetics and machine learning. Initially launched in 2018 and extended in 2021, this partnership will now continue through 2026.

The collaboration aims to support Vertex in developing innovative therapies for serious diseases. Genomics has played a crucial role in utilizing advanced genetic insights to identify disease pathways, discover new targets, and plans to expand these efforts across additional therapeutic areas.

In this extended phase, Genomics intends to leverage its genomic data to enhance patient population identification and refine biomarker selection, reducing early-stage efficacy assessment risks.

Mark Bunnage, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Research at Vertex, highlighted, "Vertex and Genomics have combined Vertex's research capabilities with Genomics' genetic expertise to identify promising therapeutic targets and advance them toward effective treatments. We are eager to continue advancing our collaborative efforts in drug development."

Professor Sir Peter Donnelly FRS, FMedSci, Founder and CEO of Genomics plc, added, "We are delighted to extend our partnership with Vertex once again. Through our genomic data platform, we have discovered genetically validated targets that have the potential to address significant medical needs. Vertex's commitment to innovative pipeline development aligns with our goal of advancing precision medicine to benefit patients."

This extension demonstrates the ongoing commitment of both companies to advancing precision medicine and delivering transformative therapies to patients globally.
