Monday, November 06, 2023
Genevant Sciences, a prominent company specializing in nucleic acid delivery and holding an extensive lipid nanoparticle (LNP) patent portfolio, has announced a collaboration and nonexclusive licensing agreement with Novo Nordisk. This partnership aims to integrate Genevant's proprietary LNP technology with Novo Nordisk's innovative mRNA-based megaTAL technology to develop an in vivo gene editing therapy for hemophilia A. This collaboration is an extension of a previous research and development partnership in hemophilia A between Novo Nordisk and 2seventy bio, as previously disclosed by 2seventy bio.
Genevant Sciences, expressed excitement about this joint venture, stating, "We are enthusiastic about partnering with Novo Nordisk to develop a potentially groundbreaking gene editing therapy for individuals with hemophilia A, addressing the need for innovative treatment options. This significant collaboration underscores the critical role of advanced LNP delivery technology in unlocking the vast potential of RNA-based therapeutics."
Karina Thorn, Corporate Vice President of RNA and Gene Therapies at Novo Nordisk, highlighted the importance of effective delivery for the success of RNA therapeutics. She stated, "We recognize the significance of delivery in the effectiveness of RNA therapeutics and are eagerly anticipating our direct collaboration with Genevant to bring a next-generation gene editing therapy to individuals living with hemophilia A."
This agreement results from the activation of an option in a previous arrangement between Genevant and 2seventy bio, which was subsequently transferred to Novo Nordisk by 2seventy bio. The financial terms of the agreement align with the terms negotiated between Genevant and 2seventy bio, as initially announced by 2seventy bio in January 2022.
