Ferrer Signs Strategic Collaboration with Prilenia for the Co-Development and Commercialisation of Pridopidine
Monday, April 28, 2025
Ferrer, an international pharmaceutical company focusing on rare neurological diseases, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Prilenia Therapeutics B.V., a clinical-stage biotech company. Under the terms of the agreement, Ferrer will gain the rights to develop, manufacture, and commercialise Pridopidine in several regions, including Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, Southern Africa, Central and South America, and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Pridopidine is a potent, orally administered sigma-1 receptor agonist designed to regulate neuroprotective mechanisms that are often impaired in neurodegenerative diseases. It is being investigated as a potential treatment for Huntington's Disease (HD), a rare inherited disorder with a significant unmet medical need. The drug has been studied in over 1,700 participants, with long-term safety data available from clinical trials spanning up to seven years. These studies indicate that Pridopidine, at its therapeutic dose, has a safety and tolerability profile similar to a placebo.
The European Medicines Agency is currently reviewing Pridopidine as a treatment for Huntington's Disease, with a decision expected from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use in the second half of 2025.
The agreement includes an upfront payment, along with additional milestone payments based on regulatory, development, commercial, and sales achievements. Prilenia will also receive royalties on net sales of Pridopidine.
Ferrer aims to further its mission of using business for social justice by focusing its pipeline on diseases with high unmet needs. The collaboration with Prilenia brings together the strengths of both companies to address the challenges faced by patients suffering from rare diseases.
Prilenia's CEO emphasised the importance of the partnership in advancing therapies for neurodegenerative diseases globally, with a shared commitment to improving the lives of patients. The collaboration aims to accelerate the availability of Pridopidine and potentially expand its use in other conditions in the future.
Ferrer’s Chief Scientific and Business Development Officer highlighted the significance of securing the rights to Pridopidine, marking an important step in the company’s research strategy in neurodegeneration.
