Eli Lilly Unveils $3 Billion Manufacturing Facility in Netherlands, Marking Major Investment in European Pharma Supply Chain

Eli Lilly and Company has made a groundbreaking announcement today, unveiling plans to build a state-of-the-art $3 billion manufacturing facility in Katwijk, situated within the renowned Leiden Bio Science Park in the Netherlands. This significant strategic investment is positioned to markedly enhance Lilly’s capacity for the production of oral medicines, supporting both current and future demand across key therapeutic areas such as cardiometabolic diseases, oncology, neuroscience, and immunology.
The newly announced facility will adopt advanced, next-generation pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, reflecting global trends towards automation, digitalisation, and flexibility in drug production. Notably, technological implementations will include dock-to-dock automation of material flow, fully paperless operations, process analytical technology for real-time quality control, and the use of spray-dried dispersion techniques. These process advances are designed to significantly improve the absorption and efficacy of oral medications, while streamlining production cycles and reducing operational overhead.
Crucially, the plant is expected to play a pivotal role in the commercial production of orforglipron, Lilly’s first oral, small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. Regulatory filings for orforglipron as an anti-obesity therapy are anticipated by the end of 2025, underlining the relevance of this facility to Lilly’s forthcoming portfolio expansion in metabolic care. By investing in a European-based production center, the company aims to sharpen its ability to respond dynamically to regional market demands, expedite medicine distribution within the European Union, and maintain resilient, localized supply chain operations in the face of shifting global logistics pressures.

The project will generate approximately 500 high-wage, skilled jobs across engineering, life sciences operations, and laboratory functions. In addition, roughly 1,500 further positions are expected to be created during the facility’s construction phase, signifying a considerable economic boost for the South Holland region. These opportunities are intended to foster local expertise, promote knowledge exchange, and strengthen the innovation ecosystem anchored in the Netherlands’ top-tier life sciences market.
This facility continues Lilly’s pattern of significant recent investments in European manufacturing, with existing sites already in France, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, and additional new projects underway in Ireland and Germany.
