Boehringer Ingelheim Expands Portfolio with Acquisition of Nerio Therapeutics' Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor

Tuesday, July 30, 2024

Boehringer Ingelheim has made a major advancement in its immuno-oncology pipeline by acquiring Nerio Therapeutics Inc. for up to USD 1.3 billion. This acquisition will integrate Nerio’s groundbreaking preclinical program into Boehringer Ingelheim's portfolio, aiming to enhance cancer treatment outcomes.

Nerio’s small molecules are designed to inhibit protein tyrosine phosphatases N1 and N2 (PTPN1 and PTPN2), which act as immune checkpoints. By blocking these checkpoints, the inhibitors can help activate the immune system to better target and destroy cancer cells.

Current immune checkpoint inhibitors have had a transformative impact on cancer treatment, but their effectiveness varies among patients. Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to bridging this gap by expanding its portfolio with new therapies that boost immune response against cancer. The small molecule inhibitors from Nerio are expected to be effective both on their own and in combination with other therapies in development at Boehringer Ingelheim.

Paola Casarosa, a Member of the Board of Managing Directors at Boehringer Ingelheim and head of the Innovation Unit, stated, “The acquisition of Nerio Therapeutics' novel checkpoint inhibitors significantly expands our ability to explore new cancer treatment combinations, moving us closer to our goal of improving cancer care.”

Sanford Madigan, partner at Avalon BioVentures, L.P. and co-founder and CEO of Nerio Therapeutics, added, “We are excited about the opportunity to work with Boehringer Ingelheim, whose commitment to unlocking the potential of our PTPN1/N2 inhibitors aligns with our vision of advancing cancer treatment.”

This acquisition represents a strategic enhancement of Boehringer Ingelheim’s oncology pipeline, supporting the development of both targeted and combination therapies aimed at providing substantial benefits for cancer patients.
