Boehringer Ingelheim and Re-Vana Therapeutics Partner to Develop Long-Acting Eye Treatments
Tuesday, July 29, 2025
Boehringer Ingelheim has entered into a strategic collaboration and licensing agreement with Re-Vana Therapeutics, a company based in the US and UK that specialises in ocular therapies and drug delivery technologies. The partnership aims to develop extended-release treatments for eye diseases, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden of frequent eye injections.
Millions of people worldwide live with eye conditions that can gradually lead to vision loss, affecting independence and quality of life. Boehringer Ingelheim has a strong focus on eye health, with four projects currently in Phase II development, and is committed to preserving vision through innovative therapies.
Treatments for retinal and other ophthalmic conditions often involve repeated injections directly into the eye, which can be uncomfortable and challenging for patients. Re-Vana’s delivery platform is designed to release medication steadily over six to twelve months. This approach has the potential to reduce the frequency of injections, improving treatment adherence and potentially leading to better clinical outcomes.
As part of the agreement, Boehringer Ingelheim plans to integrate Re-Vana’s technology with its existing pipeline in ophthalmology. The collaboration allows for up to three new projects per year across different treatment approaches. The two companies will jointly manage Re-Vana’s feasibility and early development activities. Boehringer Ingelheim will lead clinical trials, regulatory submissions, and global commercialisation of the resulting therapies.
The agreement includes exclusive rights for Boehringer Ingelheim to target specific diseases and involves upfront payments, as well as development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments. The total potential value of the deal for the first three targets could exceed $1 billion, with additional royalty payments on future sales.
