Boehringer Ingelheim Acquires Evax to Expand Equine Health Pipeline

Boehringer Ingelheim has acquired Evax AG, a Swiss biotechnology company developing therapeutic vaccines for equine health.
Founded more than a decade ago at the University of Zurich, Evax has been researching therapeutic vaccines for unmet health needs in horses, with a particular focus on allergic skin diseases.
Allergic and dermatological conditions are common in horses and can significantly affect their health and wellbeing. Existing management options, including shampoos and topical treatments, can require frequent use and often provide temporary relief. Some treatments, such as corticosteroids, can also present safety considerations.
Evax is developing therapeutic vaccines based on virus-like particle technology. The approach is designed to stimulate the horse’s immune system to produce neutralising antibodies against factors involved in allergic disease, with the aim of addressing the underlying cause rather than only managing symptoms.
The acquisition adds Evax’s technology and development programmes to Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health’s equine portfolio. The company expects the technology to support the development of longer-acting treatment options for allergic skin diseases and other areas of unmet need in animal health.
Boehringer Ingelheim has previously invested in therapeutic vaccine technologies, including through its collaboration with and subsequent acquisition of Saiba Animal Health in 2024.
The acquisition of Evax further strengthens the company’s strategy to develop preventive and therapeutic solutions for animal health, including chronic conditions in pets and allergy-related disorders in horses.
